Foster care isn't one-size-fits-all. There are several types of fostering, each suited to different lifestyles, skills, and commitments.
Caring for a child for a few weeks to a few months while a long-term plan is made. This is the most common type and suits people who want variety and can be flexible.
Providing a stable home for a child until they reach adulthood (usually 18, sometimes 21). This creates deep bonds and is ideal for families who want to make a lasting commitment.
Giving other foster carers or birth families a break by caring for a child for short periods — typically weekends or school holidays. Perfect if you want to foster but have limited availability.
Taking in a child at very short notice (sometimes within hours) when they've been removed from their home in a crisis. Requires flexibility but is incredibly impactful.
Working with children who have complex needs — trauma, disabilities, challenging behaviour. Requires additional training but comes with higher fees and intensive support.
Supporting a parent (often a young mum) and their baby together, helping them develop parenting skills in a safe environment.
Your lifestyle, experience, and preferences will guide the best fit. Ask agencies which placement types they specialise in — some focus heavily on therapeutic fostering, others on short-term or respite.

FosterReady is not a fostering agency. We're an independent platform built to help solve the UK's fostering crisis — with over 83,000 children in care and not enough foster families to support them.
Our training, guides, and tools are completely free and always will be. Whether you're seriously considering fostering or just curious about what's involved, you can explore everything at your own pace — no sign-up required, no sales calls, no pressure.
If you decide it's right for you, we can help connect you with Ofsted-registered agencies in your area. But that's your decision, on your timeline.
