One of the most important decisions you'll make as a new foster carer is who to foster with. There are two main options: Independent Fostering Agencies (IFAs) and local authority fostering services.
Independent Fostering Agencies are Ofsted-registered private organisations that recruit, assess, train, and support foster carers. There are around 300 IFAs in the UK.
Every council has its own in-house fostering service. They perform the same functions as IFAs but are run by the public sector.
| Factor | IFA | Local Authority |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly fee | £200–£600+ | £0–£150 |
| Maintenance allowance | At or above minimum | Usually minimum |
| Support | Smaller caseloads, more 1:1 | Larger caseloads |
| Training | Often more extensive | Standard Skills to Foster |
| Employment status | Self-employed | Sometimes employee benefits |
It depends on what matters most to you. If pay and support are priorities, IFAs often win. If you value stability and local connections, your council's service may suit. Visit multiple agencies before deciding — attend their information evenings and ask to speak to existing carers.
