The numbers tell a stark story. The UK urgently needs more foster carers — and the gap between supply and demand is growing.
Several factors drive the foster carer shortage:
The highest demand areas include London (9,700+ children in care), Birmingham (4,600+), Greater Manchester (4,200+), and Glasgow (2,200+). But every region in the UK needs more carers.
If you're considering fostering, start by contacting your local authority or an IFA operating in your area. The Fostering Network's helpline (Fosterline) can also provide free, impartial advice.

FosterReady is not a fostering agency. We're an independent platform built to help solve the UK's fostering crisis — with over 83,000 children in care and not enough foster families to support them.
Our training, guides, and tools are completely free and always will be. Whether you're seriously considering fostering or just curious about what's involved, you can explore everything at your own pace — no sign-up required, no sales calls, no pressure.
If you decide it's right for you, we can help connect you with Ofsted-registered agencies in your area. But that's your decision, on your timeline.
